David Brindley, director of the copydesk at National Geographic, is decidedly not a stickler when it comes to language usage. He relies more on common sense and a healthy dose of skepticism than strict adherence to grammar rules. Before arriving at the Geographic in 2002, he worked in a variety of journalism jobs, from photographer for his college newspaper to researcher, fact-checker, reporter, writer, and editor. He is a member of the National Geographic Style Committee and the American Copy Editors Society.
When he's not editing, he sometimes performs as a supernumerary—a non-singing actor—for the Washington National Opera and has appeared onstage with such luminaries as Plácido Domingo and Denyce Graves. Even for this opinionated copy editor, keeping one's mouth shut in their company is a cinch.
