Blog: Rogers Rules of Order
Lesley Rogers, aka StyleMaven, has spent her entire career at National Geographic, as researcher, copyeditor, director of research, editor, and chief editorial stylist. She arrived in the mid-60s with a B.A. in history and soon found herself assigned to research articles on the moon and the Apollo space program—orbital mechanics and lunar geology never having entered her mind until then. She adapted, thrived, and became an expert on everything from apostrophes to zodiacal light.
For 20 years she split her time between directing the magazine's research division and copyediting the magazine, while also maintaining the magazine's editorial style manual. In 2008 she became the magazine's assistant managing editor. Her greatest challenge in the fast-changing media world is upholding standards of grammar and word usage without appearing to be a dinosaur stuck in the past. She looks forward to being enlightened by her readers, and is delighted to share this space with other members of the NG Style Committee.
