Jewish men stand in prayer at the Western Wall, Judaism's most sacred place.
The first seven layers of the wall were constructed under King Herod between 22 and 15 B.C. and are composed of limestone blocks, some as long as 40 feet and weighing more than 100 tons. The top layer was constructed after the Muslim conquest in the seventh century. Part of the wall is now underground, but archaeologists believe it originally rose to the height of a 15-story building.
