     Photo: Kingman Reef

Ecologist Enric Sala investigates the plates of what is thought to be a newly discovered species of coral in the Kingman Reef, located in the South Pacific. The circular shape of this coral is unique. "We called it the flying saucer," says photographer Brian Skerry. The growth of the plates helps scientists determine the age of the coral, which is estimated to be around 500 years old.

Let's hope that Mr. Sala is not kneeling upon and touching this coral as it appears in the photograph! Remember, we must look but NOT touch. Thanks

When I first saw the smaller inset image of this object I thought it resembled a head of cabbage that had been flattened. This is a beautiful display of evolution, and should be given protection so it will survive scavengers or simple destruction. Along with it's exact location being disclosed. Thank you NG for sharing this wonderful image. I'm amazed that no one else has had comments about this amazing object.

My first impression was also cabbage. I wonder if it grows in a spiral pattern? Any why it is the only growth area...why are there no smaller pods surrounding the larger one. Fascinating really. I am sure many researchers will want to see it...amazing find and impressive photo.
