While on assignment in Bolivia, photographer George Steinmetz made this image of hielo penitente, or penitent ice, at approximately 19,000 feet on the east side of Volcán Pomerape. The ice formation "gets its name from the spiky form resembling hands held together in the form of prayer," notes Steinmetz. In the background is the glacier-capped Volcán Parinacota.
